At WAIT Training we realize that we must link up all high risk behaviors in a risk avoidance message. Teens who get involved in early debut of sexual activity are more likely to also be taking drugs, drinking alcohol, smoking, etc.
This message is also about poverty reduction. The evidence that having a baby outside of a committed, stable, healthy marriage relationship resulting in poverty for a large portion of that child's life is stunning! Being a single parent is the hardest job in the world and many are doing a heroic job, but wouldn't it be nice if there was a committed partner to help with this daunting task?
Our goal is to get kids to delay early onset of sexual debut not to get them married. We join with other community based organizations to help teens progress past their adolescence with the least amount of emotional, physical and economic baggage as possible. If they do have sex before marriage, are the abstinence programs a failure? I think not. In any public health initiative, if people who are obese and sedentary in their lifestyle start walking more steps than they did the week before, we call that a success!
