WAIT Training's abstinence curriculum is not about withholding information but about giving information to teens. It is how the information is given that is important. The problem is not teen pregnancy it is teen sex. Teaching just safe sex lessons doesn't help with the problem. Teen pregnancy is a symptom of a much larger challenge.
Be assured that we talk about sex only in positive terms. There is no fear or shame in loving and desiring sex
by waiting till marriage!
There are, however, several reasons why we promote abstinence until and in preparation for marriage:
It is developmentally appropriate...teen brains are concrete, marriage is a concrete concept. Words like wait until you are "ready," "mature," "responsible," "in love," "self-sufficient," in a "mutually monogamous committed relationship" are all abstract. Teens cannot wrap their concrete operational brains around those aforementioned abstract concepts. It has nothing to do with morals or religion. It is what teens can understand and is developmentally appropriate.
It also gives us the opportunity to talk about marriage in a positive way. Many teens are cynical about marriage and they have every right to be. We live in a culture of serial monogamy, cohabitation and divorce. When children are part of those unions and there is a disruption of stability, they get hurt. Society and government many times has to pick up the pieces.
